Why Do Ten Million Pro-Choice Women Still Support the Anti-Choice Candidacy of John McCain?
There may be millions of pro-choice Republican women who might shift their allegiances to Obama once they understand that John McCain is unalterably opposed to a woman’s right to choose.
One thing is certain. No matter what the outcome, at least 45 million American women will vote in the November election. If current polls hold steady, 20 million or more of them will vote for John McCain.
Polls further say that at least one half of the women who are supporters of McCain also support a woman’s right to choose.
This disconnect suggests that with fair and proper persuasion there is a major opportunity for Obama to win a significant number of votes among women who currently intend to support McCain.
Here is the truth that needs to be told.
Throughout his 22-year career in the Senate, McCain has been a consistent and steadfast opponent of a woman’s right to choose.
The certainty of his opposition to choice is revealed on his official Web site: “John McCain believes Roe v. Wade is a flawed decision that must be overturned.”
Speaking at the annual convention of the Conservative Political Action Conference this past February in Washington, D.C., McCain stated that he will appoint Supreme Court justices in the mold of John Roberts and Samuel Alito, two justices who will almost surely vote to reverse Roe v. Wade.
In a statement read by GOP Senator Sam Brownback of Kansas at the March for Life in Washington, D.C., on January 22, 2008, McCain wrote, “I pledge to be a loyal and unswerving friend of the right to life movement.”
Over the past 20 years there have been 130 votes in the U.S. Senate concerning abortion or some aspect of women’s reproductive health. On 125 of these votes John McCain has come down on the anti-choice side of the issue.
Barack Obama, on the other hand, is unyielding in his support for women’s rights: “I’ll never back down in defending a woman’s right to choose.”

I find it so sad that there are women ready to cast a vote for Sen. John McGoo when he has stated in such plain English what kind of Supreme Court judges he would appoint. I am a retired woman that doesn’t have to face this choice, but I do know that I want my two daughter-in-laws and two lovely granddaughters to have the choice. I do not support late term abortions, but I will always believe in CHOICE…….this is one reason I WILL vote for Sen. Obama - I only wish women of all ages, races, and political leanings would do the same.
John McCain believes it should be “sent back to the states.” That’s what the slaveholders said about slavery, let the states decide. Always the enemies of humanity, with their “let the states decide.” Just as long as it’s not their freedom!
You say McCain can appoint….. I see this all the time….. McCain cannot appoint any Supreme Court Justices ……. HE CAN ONLY NOMINATE…… they have to be approved by Congress.
With a strong Democrat congress, McCain will be FORCED to go moderate.
Bush had a Republican Congress to work with.
Women are not one issue voters anymore. I think, we as women, are all Pro Life which is also part of Pro Choice. And, so are the other options. Legal but rare….. Hillary Clinton……. Isn’t it interesting that under Bill Clinton’s administration the abortions rate was down and under Bush they have gone up.
We are not going to “not” vote for McCain on this issue alone. We really need to see them together facing each other and facing the Nation……. Why do we have to wait so long?
I think it’s religious.
The majority of Evangelicals continue to support the same party (Republicans), based on the asinine premise that these people represent wholesome values (against abortion and against gays). Look around you at the present cast of this so-called party of wholesome people; they lie, cheat, hate, war, profane, tear down people’s hopes and dreams, mischaracterize for personal gain, and all manner of sinful and deplorable behavior.
Yet, the Evangelicals will overlook all of these sinful traits, and continue to support these evil people (if Satan himself stated he was pro-life and against gays, they would rally around him too; that’s how crazy it is to continue to vote for people that consistently demonstrate a lack of morals, ethics, character, or common decency).
I’m against abortion and I’m against the gay lifestyle, but I will allow people to do as they choose and let God be the judge. On the other hand, I’ve witnessed the way that the current crop of Republicans are running a shameful campaign (lying, manipulating, cheating, mischaracterizations, underhanded shenanigans, etc.), just as they seem to always do; I see these people for what they are, secular and godless creatures that I cannot stomach any longer. At least with Obama, he exudes some class, tact, grace, and some semblance of dignity; a far cry from what the McCain campaign and his supporters are doing.
In closing, as for all of the Evangelical preachers that continue to bully pulpit for these devilish leaders, while misleading their congregations, I think you all should be ashamed of yourselves. The warnings that these Evangelical preachers disseminate for abortions and gays, would be better served as warnings against people or candidates that consistently lie, cheat, hate, tear down people’s hopes and dreams, mischaracterize for personal gain, manipulate the uneducated, and overall project characteristics that are contrary to God’s Holy Word!
(McCain has used biblical themes and Moses to garner votes; this is the devil’s work, but the Evangelicals have forgotten that the things of God are to remain untouched from devilish purposes).
Vote Senator Obama for President!
